Bixby Chocolate’s Haitian cacao beans have had a re-birth. For over a century, large export companies purchased low-quality cacao from smallholder farmers at prices below the commodity market. Produits des Iles S.A (PISA), an environmentally committed direct trade source, changed the way Haitian cacao is processed and exported. The results of these changes improved the quality exponentially and the farmers are now experiencing the monetary benefits. Before PISA, farmers were abandoning their groves and participating in the environmentally disastrous charcoal market. Now Haitian cacao is ranked among the best of the Caribbean/ Central American organic beans.
