Single Origin Chocolate: Thailand
Cocoa was introduced to Thailand in the early 20th century through regional exchanges and agricultural programs, but it remained a minor crop for decades with little commercial demand as rubber, rice, and fruit dominated the agricultural economy. Government extension efforts and experimental plantings in the mid‑20th century expanded cultivation modestly, yet many farmers treated cacao as an intercrop or supplemental income source rather than a primary cash crop. Production contracted at times when processing capacity and market access were limited, leaving only scattered Theobroma trees across southern and some eastern provinces. In the early 2000s renewed interest from researchers, agronomists, and entrepreneurs—combined with the development of locally adapted hybrids and improved post‑harvest practices—sparked a quality‑focused revival. Since then Thailand has trended toward small‑farm, traceable production emphasizing careful fermentation and drying, and its beans are increasingly used by craft chocolatiers and bean‑to‑bar makers seeking distinctive, terroir‑driven flavors.
